MEMS Sensor Integration with Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC for Developing Power Efficient Solutions for Mobile Devices

MEMS sensors enable solutions that allow richer interaction for users with their surroundings. These sensors, enabled with computing resources and low-power connectivity, are combined to form smart systems. Many of the MEMS sensors in portfolio of ST Microelectronics have been integrated with various Qualcomm® SoCs such as Snapdragon™ 820 MSM8996 and are in mass production at major device vendors. The lowering of power consumption while enabling new features, is a continual commercial desire for consumer devices such as mobile phone and wearables. Many of these embedded features have competing constraints such as accuracy versus power consumption versus latency. Integrating features such as S4S Sensor Synchronization in ST sensors allows for achieving better power efficiency. Programmable MEMS sensor is another novel solution developed by ST, which allows for embedding algorithms in the sensor for very low power always-on use case scenario. Product designer can configure their algorithms on programmable sensors integrated with Snapdragon SoC for a power efficient implementation for a variety of applications such as contextual awareness.
