Gigabit Class broadband speeds was one of the foundational promises of 4G LTE technology. As LTE technology has evolved since initial deployments, steady progress has been made in using techniques such as carrier aggregation to enhance download speeds from a peak of 100 Mbps initially, to nearly half a Gigabit today. But achieving Gigabit LTE requires new techniques beyond straightforward carrier aggregation, calling upon more sophisticated features in LTE Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro to put Gigabit Class LTE speeds within reach to operators, OEMs, and ultimately, consumers. Serge's contribution was instrumental in establishing and expanding Qualcomm's leadership in UMTS and LTE systems, products and standardization. Serge holds a Master in Telecommunication Sciences from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Based on independent drive test data collected in commercial LTE networks from around the world, SRG will showcase how some leading LTE operators are taking full advantage of commercially-available features to maximize the performance of their LTE networks. These features include the combination of 256-QAM and 3-carrier CA, which when deployed in a macro and/or small cell network substantially boost end user data rates and increase network / spectral efficiency. In the uplink direction, there is 64-QAM and uplink CA, which more than offset the widening gap between downlink and uplink speeds, thus addressing a critical element of the overall user experience while enabling the network to meet the growing amount of uplink data traffic. Finally, there is the EVS voice codec, which was specifically introduced with LTE in mind. Although AMR-WB delivers HD voice, EVS achieves the same voice quality while requiring fewer network resources, or it delivers superior voice quality with comparable network resource requirements.

Gopi Sirineni is vice president of product management for Qualcomm Atheros, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing product management and business development for the wired and wireless infrastructure networking (WIN) business unit and running connected home solutions (CHS) group.

Under Gopi’s leadership, he has also helped establish Qualcomm’s leading position in Wi-Fi. Working closely with engineering, Gopi played a key role in positioning Qualcomm as the leading provider of 802.11ac with MU-MIMO solutions for connected home, securing designs with all major router manufacturers. He developed QCT’s strategy for whole home coverage with addition of smart repeaters in the home, a segment that Qualcomm now leads, and drove the strategy and launch of Wi-Fi SON (self-organizing networks), a homegrown software solution and key differentiator for all Qualcomm connectivity products. Additionally, Gopi successfully led the customer expansion and diversification strategy for the CHS business unit by securing designs from all major router manufacturers, including Google, Linksys, Netgear, ASUS, Eero, Luma, Plume, D-link, Xiaomi, among others.

Gopi joined Qualcomm in 2012, through the acquisition of Ubicom, as senior director of business development for the networking business unit, and played a key role in driving the consumer electronics, carrier and retail segments.

Prior to Qualcomm, Gopi held executive marketing and engineering leadership roles at Ubicom, Appliedmicro, Cavium, Marvell and IDT, where he built up expertise in core networking, embedded CPU and Wi-Fi. He was also founder and chief executive officer of Cloudgrapes, a cloud transcoding company.

Gopi earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Arkansas and a bachelor’s degree in electronics and communications engineering from Osmania University, Hyderabad.

Neville Meijers is the vice president of Small Cell for Qualcomm Technologies Inc.. In his Small Cell role, Meijers leads the continued evolution of the cross company Small Cell and LTE-U technologies, product management and business development activities to ensure alignment with Qualcomm’s vision for solving the 1000x data challenge and adoption of Qualcomm Small Cell products by operators across the globe. Prior to this, Meijers lead a number of different access related projects including the enablement of high quality, low cost delivery of live and non-real time media over LTE Broadcast and building proximity based platforms to deliver new use cases and business models. In 2008 Meijers joined Qualcomm as General Manager of MediaFLO International, Qualcomm's internationally focused mobile broadcast business unit.

Before joining Qualcomm, Meijers worked for Discovery Communications where he served as executive vice president of Discovery Communications' Antenna Audio, a world leader in audio and multimedia. He has held senior executive positions in the areas of corporate strategy and business development for Discovery Communications worldwide and was executive vice president and managing director for Discovery Networks Asia based out of Singapore. Meijers' background combines a wealth of technical experience and global business success in the broadcast and Internet industries from his many years in C-level executive positions with Naspers and MIH - two of the world's leading international media companies.

Dean Brenner is Senior Vice President, Government Affairs for Qualcomm Incorporated. He directs Qualcomm’s global spectrum strategy and initiatives. He represents Qualcomm before the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other agencies of the United States and Canadian governments responsible for spectrum and telecommunications policy. In this role, he regularly interacts with spectrum regulators around the world, leaders in the wireless industry developing and deploying new technologies, and press and analysts covering the wireless industry. For the past 13 years, he has lead Qualcomm’s efforts to drive a host of new wireless technologies through the regulatory policy process.

Mr. Brenner has unique expertise in spectrum auctions. He led Qualcomm’s bidding team in spectrum auctions in India (the 2.3 GHz band), the United States (the Lower 700 MHz band), and the United Kingdom (the L Band). He headed the regulatory team which obtained the approvals to sell Qualcomm’s spectrum licenses in all three countries. He was personally responsible for obtaining the regulatory approvals for Qualcomm’s sale of Lower 700 MHz spectrum to AT&T in 2011. In 2006, he obtained the regulatory approvals to launch FLO TV, a mobile TV service. He has spoken at conferences on spectrum policy in the United States, Canada, South Korea, Belgium, Great Britain, and elsewhere around the world. He joined Qualcomm in November 2003.

Mr. Brenner received his A.B. degree, magna cum laude with distinction in public policy studies, from Duke University in 1982. He won a prize for the best paper on communications policy, and he was a recipient for four years of a CBS Scholarship. He received his J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University in 1985. He is admitted to the Bars of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the D.C., Third, and Eleventh Circuits, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Mr. Brenner is a member of the United States Federal Advisory Board for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, & Timing, which advises the United States Executive Branch agencies on policy matters impacting the Global Positioning System. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of 4G Americas and the Board for Jewish Life at Duke University.

Alex Holcman is senior vice president of Corporate Engineering (QCES) for Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.  In his current role, Holcman leads a centralized organization that provides end-to-end engineering services to accelerate the cost effective development and commercialization of Qualcomm technologies. With more than 1,300 engineers, QCES provides services to Qualcomm Technologies’ internal businesses and external customers.

Holcman has held a wide variety of engineering and management positions within Qualcomm since joining the company more than 20 years ago. Previously within QCES, Holcman led ESG, an engineering team that colloborates with operators around the world to optimize and evolve their wireless networks. Prior to joining QCES, he served as lead systems engineer for the Globalstar Mobile Satellite System, and was also responsible for some of the company’s core network infrastructure products.

Possessing significant expertise in wireless network technology, Holcman helped Qualcomm to pioneer 3G/CDMA technology by contributing to 3G cellular and 3G/CDMA/IS-41C intersystem operations standards, and developing software for the first AMPS/CDMA dual-mode mobile phone.

Holcman holds more than 24 patents, as well as a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer sciences from the University of Illinois, and a master’s degree in telecommunications from the Australian Telecom Research Institute.

Prior to this role, he was responsible for product management of Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ application processor technologies.

Talluri has more than 20 years of experience spanning across business management, strategic marketing, and engineering management.

He began his career at Texas Instruments (TI), working on media processing in their corporate research labs. During that time, Talluri started multiple new businesses in digital consumer electronics and wireless technologies. He also served as general manager of the imaging and audio business for five years, where he led the development of successful digital signal processing technologies for various consumer electronics devices. Later, Talluri was named general manager of the cellular media solution business in TI’s wireless terminals business unit. In this role, he led the successful launch of TI’s OMAP3 and OMAP4 application processor platform for smartphones.

Talluri holds a Ph.D in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He also holds a Master of Engineering from Anna University in Chennai, India and a Bachelor of Engineering from Andhra University in Waltair, India.

He has published more than 35 journal articles, papers, and book chapters in many leading electrical engineering publications. He has been granted 13 U.S. patents for image processing, video compression, and media processor architectures.

Raj Talluri was chosen as No. 5, in Fast Company’s list of 100 Most Creative People in business in 2014.

Duggal has worked in Qualcomm Automotive since 2011 and most recently, has been instrumental in building the automotive portfolio including the Snapdragon Automotive infotainment solutions.

Prior to joining Qualcomm, Duggal was a product engineer at Tata Telecom in India, where he was responsible for product management and systems engineering for the company's wire-line switching systems.

In this role, Pankaj is responsible for leading Qualcomm’s efforts to establish and grow its presence across the wearables segments including smart eyewear, smart watches, kid/elderly watches, smart bands, smart headsets, smart clothing, and wearable accessories. Under Pankaj’s leadership, Qualcomm has enabled its customers to ship 100+ products in 30+ countries over the last 2 years. Pankaj joined Qualcomm in late 2013 in a new business development role and has led its efforts to incubate the wearables segment at the company.

Previously, Pankaj was the director of business development and innovation at Intel Corporation where he was responsible for winning, nurturing, and launching mobility products and technologies. Pankaj launched the Intel Atom processor and led the company’s early efforts to establish its presence and momentum in the tablet, mobile Internet device, and smartphone categories. Earlier at Intel, Pankaj played an instrumental role in accelerating the deployment of Notebook PCs in the industry by defining and implementing the company’s product/marketing strategies and launching a range of products including Centrino, Pentium 4 and Pentium III processors. Pankaj joined Intel in 1996 and held a series of executive advisory, strategy, marketing, planning, ecosystem, and business development roles across the company. He holds one of the early/defining patents around implementing low power sub-systems in mobile devices.

Prior to Intel, Pankaj was in the management consulting industry for five years leading projects in strategy, management, and information technology. Pankaj is an avid TED follower and has spoken at multiple TEDx events about the impact of mobile technologies around the world. He is frequently sought after as a speaker at industry events in the area of mobile, wearable, wireless, and Internet, and has been extensively quoted in mainstream publications.

Pankaj holds a Master of Business Administration from Wharton, a Master of Science from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Science from the Indian Institute of Technology.

Qualcomm offers a Preferred Vendor List (PVL) of third-party hardware components compatible with Snapdragon™-based Android smartphone designs, including Qualcomm Reference Designs. This PVL numbers over 1,000 parts, covering the complete MSM/APQ roadmap, and includes memories, cameras, displays, touch panels, sensors, 3rd party RF components, crystals, and passive components.

This talk will highlight our recent additions to the PVL for memories, cameras, and sensors. Our end-to-end memory processes were revamped, resulting in a doubling of monthly memory verification throughput. The majority of our camera sensors are now PDAF-capable, while also adding 2PD and other camera types. To further enable our camera ecosystem, we trained hundreds of customer and vendor camera engineers on our latest tools. We added new sensors across our SnapdragonTM roadmap, signed up many new sensor vendors, enabled a new SnapdragonTM 820 development platform, and released the OpenSSC 4.0 software suite. This latter platform and software suite enable our sensor vendor partners to independently develop and perform initial testing on drivers compatible with the latest Android releases and performance requirements.

Neil has held leadership roles in telecommunications with top global companies since 1986, including AT&T Bell Labs, AirTouch Communications, Vodafone Group, J-Phone Group (Tokyo), IBM Global Services (Beijing), and from 2006, Qualcomm. In January 2016, WiFi Alliance estimated more than 12 billion devices had shipped with 802.11n since its inception.

MEMS sensors enable solutions that allow richer interaction for users with their surroundings. These sensors, enabled with computing resources and low-power connectivity, are combined to form smart systems. Many of the MEMS sensors in portfolio of ST Microelectronics have been integrated with various Qualcomm® SoCs such as Snapdragon™ 820 MSM8996 and are in mass production at major device vendors. The lowering of power consumption while enabling new features, is a continual commercial desire for consumer devices such as mobile phone and wearables. Many of these embedded features have competing constraints such as accuracy versus power consumption versus latency. Integrating features such as S4S Sensor Synchronization in ST sensors allows for achieving better power efficiency. Programmable MEMS sensor is another novel solution developed by ST, which allows for embedding algorithms in the sensor for very low power always-on use case scenario. Product designer can configure their algorithms on programmable sensors integrated with Snapdragon SoC for a power efficient implementation for a variety of applications such as contextual awareness.

Dr. Mahesh Chowdhary is Director of Strategic Platforms and IoT Excellence Center at ST Microelectronics. Prior to ST, he was a Senior Director of MEMS technology at CSR, where he worked on the integration of MEMS sensors, GPS, and wireless technologies. He has over 20 years of experience in signal processing and GPS. As Founder and CTO of Acculeon, he pioneered the use of GPS and MEMS sensors in vehicle safety applications. He has also worked on a variety of advanced navigation technologies at Visteon and on autonomous vehicles at the Corporate R&D Center at Caterpillar. As a Control Systems Scientist at Jefferson Lab, Mahesh worked on signal processing applications relating to position and energy feedback loops in the particle accelerator. Mahesh received his Ph.D. in Applied Science from The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia.

In his previous assignment, from 2011-2015, Mr. Kosaki was technical marketing manager at Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH in Sweden, where he supported mobile customers in the Nordic market mobile customers, users of Qualcomm solutions. Friedrich Plankensteiner, born in 1968, is a Sr. Manager Business Development at ams and leads the ams partner platform enabling strategy for sensors.  Mr. Plankensteiner joined ams in 2001; his roles have rotated between sales leadership; product management; and business development.  Prior to joining ams, he held Sales; Marketing; and Product Management roles at Siemens; Infineon; and Philips.
