Cristiano Amon serves as President of Qualcomm Inc.,  the world’s largest provider of wireless chipsets and software solutions. In this role, he is responsible for the oversight of all activities related to Qualcomm’s semiconductor business. Amon also serves as a member of Qualcomm’s executive committee.

Amon served as co-president of QCT for three years and prior to this was senior vice president of product management with QCT, managing the Company’s wireless chipset portfolio. Amon joined Qualcomm in 1995 as an engineer and during this time he has held several other business and technical leadership roles at the Company.

Prior to joining Qualcomm, Amon served as the chief technical officer of Vésper, a wireless operator in Brazil and held positions in NEC, Ericsson and Velocom Inc.

Amon holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from UNICAMP – Universidade Estadual de Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil.

Ericsson: Mr. Thomas Noren, VP, Head of 5G Commercialization

Thomas Noren is Head of 5G Commercialization at Ericsson. He leads Ericsson group-wide initiatives around 5G to ensure 5G readiness and a strong 5G ramp-up. His areas of focus include customer use cases, portfolio alignment, pricing models, lead-customer and ecosystem partner engagements. Throughout his career Noren has worked with cutting-edge technologies. He is credited for leading Ericsson’s global success with 4G/LTE. He also initiated and introduced the award-winning Ericsson Radio System — the company’s highly modular and efficient hardware system for radio and transport networks.
Noren joined Ericsson in 1997 and has since held several executive positions in product management, R&D, and sales. Prior to joining Ericsson, Noren was a fellow at McKinsey & Company where he worked with high-tech and industrial clients. He has lived and worked in France, Japan, and the US. Noren has a M.Sc. in engineering physics from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden and an MBA from INSEAD in France.

Woojune Kim is currently Senior Vice President, Head of Products and Business Strategy, Networks Business Unit at Samsung Electronics.

He has worked extensively in the telecommunications industry during the transition over the last 20 years from traditional telephony to IP and wireless networks, covering engineering and business roles, He started as a systems engineer at Lucent Technologies Bell Labs (Murray Hill), working on the first ATM PON/FTTH networks.

In 1999, he joined Samsung and helped develop the first commercial CDMA2000 3G system in the world. Later he joined Airvana Inc, Boston, where he became Vice President of Technology and CTO of Femtocells. In this role, he led marketing and development teams to develop new and innovative wireless products related to 4G LTE RAN, smallcells, and security and access gateways.

Since 2011 he has been with Samsung Networks, working in various roles, including Head of Global Product Management and Technical Sales, and Regional GM for North American Networks business. More recently he has focused on bringing the advanced 5G mmWave technology developed by Samsung’s R&D teams into commercial deployments including the first 5G trials in the world.

He obtained his Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Electrical Engineering at Seoul National University, Korea.

Co-Founder and CEO David Cole was a believer in fully-immersive media before there was such a thing. As a kid projecting 3D movies on a blanket of mist in his front yard and filmed holograms in his family's laundry room.

Now with three decades of experience in digital imaging, and stereoscopic research and development, David holds seven patents and has co-authored almost 30 more pending patents in the virtual reality space. A world David embraced as EVP of Research and Development, and Member of the Board of Directors for a division of Kodak where he developed virtual reality display technology and the first consumer stereoscopic 3D shutter glasses.

Today, through a relentless push for more and more immersive innovations, David makes sure NextVR remains at the forefront, and then some, of delivering fully-immersive live VR sports and entertainment experiences.

Erin Chapple is the Corporate Vice President of the Program Management team within Azure responsible for the technology at the foundation of all Windows-based products: Windows Kernel, Hypervisor and Containers, Storage and Server Experience and the Linux Kernel. Erin is the Product leader for Windows Server and in this role she partners across the ecosystem to jointly innovate and deliver the silicon, hardware, systems and solutions necessary for the Windows Server business. She is also the Product leader for Always Connected PCs, partnering with silicon and device partners to bring this new category of devices to market. Erin joined Microsoft in 1998 as a Program Manager on the Small Business Server. Since then, she has contributed to over 15 operating system releases in various Program Manager leadership positions. Building communities and supporting women is as core to her as operating systems. She was a founding member of the Women’s Leadership Council within what is now the Cloud + AI division, a group that is seen as a model for women’s communities within Microsoft. In 2012 Erin’s peers at Microsoft presented her with the “Leadership Advocacy Award for Women.” Following this, Chapple turned her focus to leading Life Without Lines, the community focused on bringing the executive technical women together. Erin earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering minoring in environmental engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada. She earned her master’s degree in applied behavioral science from Bastyr University where she focused on coaching and consulting in organization as part of the Leadership Institute of Seattle. Erin lives in Seattle with her husband and son where they are looking forward to Seattle getting a hockey team to reduce the regular commute to Vancouver to watch the Canucks. Most recently, he was VP & Chief Technology Officer, Automation & Control Solutions (ACS) leading global technology and engineering organization fueling growth & innovation. Prior to leading technology agenda for ACS, Suresh was President, Honeywell Technology Solutions (HTS), leading more than 50% of Honeywell’s global technology design centers across India, China, and Czech Republic.
Suresh has 23 years of technology & IT leadership experience, beginning his career in the aerospace industry with India’s Aeronautical Development Agency. At Honeywell, he contributed to number of avionics products & platforms in Aerospace; strategically applied his business and technical expertise across businesses turning IT into a transformational growth driver; managed technology development and engineering driving and impacting Honeywell businesses and their customers globally

Philip’s background has been deep-rooted in ERP and Ecommerce technologies since the mid 1990’s giving him exceptionally strong business acumen.  As a consultant in the 1990’s - 2000’s - he most often served as a Chief Architect or CTO, engineering software products and integrated ecommerce platforms for many small, medium, and large (Fortune) companies transitioning their global businesses online.  After successfully selling his company in 2009, he joined Fossil Group where his responsibilities included digital transformation across Fossil Group’s portfolio of brands helping the company grow from $1B in revenue to over $3.5B in revenue in just the 3 years. Following this success, Philip became CTO of Fossil Group tasked with driving world-class innovation and technology where his efforts included incubating and “rebooting” Fossil’s 15-year-old smartwatch / wearable technology division quickly becoming one of the largest smartwatch companies in the world. In 2018, Philip joined Amazon Web Services as the Worldwide Tech Leader for Retail (a.k.a. AWS Retail CTO) where his responsibilities include driving innovative solutions for AWS Retail & Ecommerce customers worldwide and developing the AWS Retail (technical) vision, strategic plan, and product roadmap.  Innovative retail solutions involve the full stack of AWS products/services such as Machine Learning, IOT, AR/VR, and Blockchain, in addition to all of the existing highly scalable AWS cloud services. Alex Katouzian currently serves as senior vice president and general manager of the mobile business unit at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. In this role, Katouzian is responsible for the profit and loss of the mobile BU, which includes 3 separate business lines – Mobile Handset Solutions; Industrial IoT / Smart Cities / Modem Technologies; and Mobile Compute products for Windows On SnapDragon, Chrome, Android and Headmounted Displays – including all product management, roadmap and tech planning, program management, finance/opex, strategy, BU operations, and engineering execution groups.   
 
Katouzian brings nearly 30 years of experience to Qualcomm. Prior to joining the company, he held various management positions at Brooktree Corp, and Conexant Systems developing complete chipsets, software and system solutions for multimedia, graphics, consumer electronics, and cellular handset. 
 
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, San Diego emphasis on Semiconductor Physics

Manu is the Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director of Xiaomi India. He spearheads Xiaomi’s business in India. He started Xiaomi’s operations in India in 2014, and is responsible for all functions based in the country. He is responsible for driving the India team to a raging success in such a short time.
He started his career with McKinsey & Company as an engagement manager and went on to co-found a leading e-commerce portal called Jabong.com in 2012. At Jabong, he was responsible for driving sales and marketing for the company. Manu, along with the other cofounders were responsible for revolutionizing the Fashion e-commerce industry in India.
He graduated from IIT Delhi in 2003 where he got a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He received his post graduate degree in business management from IIM Calcutta in 2007. Manu is a doting father, loving husband, amateur cartoonist, passionate marketer a dreamer. He is passionate about new ideas and finds inspirations in everyday routines. All his spare time is dedicated in babysitting his son Jordan and spending time with his wife.

Mr. Patrick Moorhead

He has 25 years of experience including 15 years of executive experience at high tech companies leading strategy, product management, product marketing, and corporate marketing, including three industry board appointments.

He is grounded in reality as he has led the planning and execution and had to live with the outcomes.

Patrick departed AMD in 2011 where he served as Corporate Vice President and Corporate Fellow in the strategy group. There, he developed long-term strategies for mobile computing devices and personal computers. Moorhead also served in his 11 years at AMD leading product management, business planning, product marketing, regional marketing, channel marketing, and corporate marketing. Moorhead also worked at Compaq Computer Corp. during their run-up to the #1 market share leader position in personal computers. Patrick also served as an executive at AltaVista E-commerce during their search leadership reign, pioneering cost per click e-commerce models.

Moorhead also has significant board experience. He served as an executive board member of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the American Electronics Association (AEA) and chaired the board of the St. David’s Medical Center for five years, designated by Thomson Reuters as one of the 100 Top Hospitals in America.

Ed Chan is the senior vice president of Network Infrastructure Planning for Verizon, a position he has held since 2013. Ed is responsible for the strategic technology evolution of the Verizon wireless and wireline networks where he oversees long-term planning to meet future traffic demand.

Previously, Ed was vice president of Core Network Infrastructure Planning, where he directed strategy of the core network infrastructure including the optical long haul transport, packet core MPLS/IP, voice/VoIP, video/CDN and advanced network architecture such as SDN.

Prior to that, Ed was vice president of National Network Operations for Verizon Wireless, responsible for the operation of centralized national network infrastructure including the backbone IP network and commercial data systems. He also had responsibility for the Network Operations Center and technical Network Repair Bureau, which supports both consumer and enterprise customers.

Ed started his career as an engineering intern in the Bell Atlantic Mobile Systems wireless lab in 1992. Since then he has held positions of increasing responsibility, including direction of network engineering, operations and performance for southern New Jersey, Delaware and central and eastern Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia; network implementation supporting new products and services; and oversight of the convergence of legacy wireless data networks into a common network for data and voice communications.

Ed earned his master’s degree in Management of Technology from the University of Pennsylvania, and he holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University.

Mr. Takehiro Nakamura joined NTT Laboratories in 1990.  He is now SVP and General Manager of the 5G Laboratories in NTT DOCOMO, Inc.

Mr. Nakamura has been engaged in the standardization activities for the W-CDMA, HSPA, LTE/LTE-Advanced and 5G at ARIB in Japan since 1997. He has been the Acting Chairman of Strategy & Planning Committee of 5G Mobile Communications Promotion Forum(5GMF) in Japan since October 2014.

Mr. Nakamura has also been contributing to standardization activities in 3GPP since1999, including as a contributor to 3GPP TSG-RAN as chairman from April 2009 to March 2013.

He is also very active in standardization of C-V2X/Connected Car in ARIB and ITS Info-communications Forum in Japan. He is now a leader of Cellular System Application Task Group of ITS Info-communications Forum.

He joined Deutsche Telekom Group in April 2018 from Huawei Technologies. In his latest role at Huawei, Abdurazak was serving as a Vice President of 5G Europe responsible for the development of Huawei’s 5G product and market strategies in Europe.

Prior to joining Huawei in 2012, Dr. Abdurazak was lead consultant responsible for the Network and Infrastructure Competence Center at Altran Germany, at the time parent company of Arthur D. Little (ADL).

Abdurazak holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany and he was a visiting researcher at the University of Edinburgh.

As Vice President, Vendor Strategy and 5G Technologies, Dr. Abdurazak is responsible for E2E 5G technology steering from innovation via standardization towards commercial readiness.

Channa Seneviratne is the Executive Director – Network and Infrastructure Engineering. Channa is responsible for the development, resilience and operation of our fixed, wireless and transport networks.  

Channa has over 30 years of experience in Telecommunications networks having worked in both Operations and Engineering across both fixed and wireless technologies.  During his time in Telstra, Channa has played key engineering design, support and operational roles as Telstra moved from being a start up in wireless through the evolutions of 2G, CDMA, 3G, 4G and now into readiness for 5G. More recently Channa led the launch of the world’s first commercial gigabit LTE network, the activation of Australia’s largest IoT footprint through our Cat M1 technology and the launch of our 5G Innovation Centre.

Channa has a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Queensland.

Away from work Channa enjoys travel, sport, wildlife photography and spending time with his wife and two young daughters.

Charles-Henri manages an international team working alongside Orange’s global technology and ecosystem partners to secure interoperability of new technologies found in today’s connected devices with the group’s network in 28 countries.

Under his leadership, Orange has become a global leader to bring the latest cellular and technological advancements to the Orange footprint to advance both voice, data and low power wide area connectivity to millions of customers.

Prior to that, he held different positions in the wireless industry and served as a consultant at Wavestone.

Mr. Jin-Hyo Park is currently serving as CTO, Executive Vice President and Head of the ICT R&D Center at SK Telecom. In this role, Mr. Park leads the development of next generation 5G communications technologies as well as the latest advanced technologies in media, security, data analytics and autonomous driving.

Having been at SK Telecom since 1997, Mr. Park has had a variety of roles in his 20+ years including managing R&D strategy and successfully overseeing the commercialization of WCDMA and HSDPA/HSUPA networks. As leading the Access Network Lab, he is also credited with helping SK Telecom to be the first to commercialize LTE in Korea and the world’s first multi-carrier/HD Voice(VoLTE). For the last 5 years when he served as Senior Vice President and the Head of Network R&D Center, he has actively contributed to world-leading LTE-A, 5G, connected car, quantum cryptography communications technologies.

Alex Holcman is senior vice president of Corporate Engineering (QCES) for Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.  In his current role, Holcman leads a centralized organization that provides end-to-end engineering services to accelerate the cost effective development and commercialization of Qualcomm technologies. With more than 1,300 engineers, QCES provides services to Qualcomm Technologies’ internal businesses and external customers.

Holcman has held a wide variety of engineering and management positions within Qualcomm since joining the company more than 20 years ago. Previously within QCES, Holcman led ESG, an engineering team that colloborates with operators around the world to optimize and evolve their wireless networks. Prior to joining QCES, he served as lead systems engineer for the Globalstar Mobile Satellite System, and was also responsible for some of the company’s core network infrastructure products.

Possessing significant expertise in wireless network technology, Holcman helped Qualcomm to pioneer 3G/CDMA technology by contributing to 3G cellular and 3G/CDMA/IS-41C intersystem operations standards, and developing software for the first AMPS/CDMA dual-mode mobile phone.

Holcman holds more than 24 patents, as well as a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer sciences from the University of Illinois, and a master’s degree in telecommunications from the Australian Telecom Research Institute.

5G promises low latencies and enhanced mobile broadband, enabling several new use cases. While the current focus is on outdoor deployments, enterprise venues such as malls, stadiums, airports, convention centers, etc. are prime locations for indoor 5G deployments. Leading brands are eager to utilize mmWave and XR technologies to create unique, highly immersive experiences indoors, which will require increasingly complex, hyper-dense network designs.  In this session, we’ll share our experience planning mmWave 5G networks in event venues and buildings, including network designs and performance findings.

Kressin has worked in a number of engineering, marketing, and strategic planning roles within semiconductor companies for nearly 20 years. Before joining Qualcomm in 2008, Kressin worked at Intel, leading several marketing and planning teams within Intel’s desktop, chipset, WLAN, and laptop groups. Kressin led teams responsible for the introduction of Intel’s first chipsets with integrated graphics, first Wi-Fi products and the launch of Intel’s first thin and light laptops. Prior to Intel, Kressin worked in several hardware and software design engineering roles at Texas Instruments.

Kressin holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), a Master of Science in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado and a Master of Business Administration from Cornell University.  He is the author of the text "Understanding Mathematics: From Counting to Calculus" and lives in San Diego with his wife and three children.

Before joining Qualcomm, Joseph was at Philips Semiconductors (currently NXP) where he held leadership positions in product marketing/management of products including WLAN, WLAN/BT combos and ASIC/ASSP RF. He also held engineering roles working on the development of integrated circuits for TDMA and CDMA cellular phone applications as well as BiCMOS devices and processing.

Joseph earned both a Master’s of Science and Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of North Carolina, in addition to a tailored MBA (for Philips Semiconductors) from Ashridge College in the United Kingdom.

Accelerating Wearables: The New Connected Family

In this role, Pankaj is responsible for leading Qualcomm’s efforts to establish and grow its presence across the wearables segments including smart eyewear, smart watches, kid/elderly watches, smart bands, smart headsets, smart clothing, and wearable accessories. Under Pankaj’s leadership, Qualcomm has enabled its customers to ship 100+ products in 30+ countries over the last 2 years. Pankaj joined Qualcomm in late 2013 in a new business development role and has led its efforts to incubate the wearables segment at the company.

Previously, Pankaj was the director of business development and innovation at Intel Corporation where he was responsible for winning, nurturing, and launching mobility products and technologies. Pankaj launched the Intel Atom processor and led the company’s early efforts to establish its presence and momentum in the tablet, mobile Internet device, and smartphone categories. Earlier at Intel, Pankaj played an instrumental role in accelerating the deployment of Notebook PCs in the industry by defining and implementing the company’s product/marketing strategies and launching a range of products including Centrino, Pentium 4 and Pentium III processors. Pankaj joined Intel in 1996 and held a series of executive advisory, strategy, marketing, planning, ecosystem, and business development roles across the company. He holds one of the early/defining patents around implementing low power sub-systems in mobile devices.

Prior to Intel, Pankaj was in the management consulting industry for five years leading projects in strategy, management, and information technology. Pankaj is an avid TED follower and has spoken at multiple TEDx events about the impact of mobile technologies around the world. He is frequently sought after as a speaker at industry events in the area of mobile, wearable, wireless, and Internet, and has been extensively quoted in mainstream publications.

Pankaj holds a Master of Business Administration from Wharton, a Master of Science from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Science from the Indian Institute of Technology.

Global Update on Spectrum for 4G & 5G

Dean Brenner is Senior Vice President, Spectrum Strategy & Technology Policy for Qualcomm Incorporated. He directs Qualcomm’s global spectrum strategy and its other global technology policy initiatives. He represents Qualcomm before the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and other agencies of the United States and Canadian governments responsible for spectrum and telecommunications policy and oversees Qualcomm’s spectrum regulatory work elsewhere. He regularly interacts with spectrum regulators around the world, leaders in the wireless industry developing and deploying new technologies, and analysts and reporters covering the wireless industry.
For the past 15 years, he has lead Qualcomm’s successful efforts to win regulatory approval for many new wireless technologies, including: the world’s first deployments of 4G in unlicensed spectrum, known as LTE-U and LAA; the world’s first deployments of supplemental downlink, aggregating paired and unpaired spectrum, to deliver faster downloads using 3G and later 4G; the world’s first mobile video network deployed on 700 MHz spectrum before the digital TV transition; and, the allocation of numerous spectrum bands by the FCC and other spectrum regulators for 3G, 4G, and 5G.
Mr. Brenner has unique expertise in spectrum auctions. He led Qualcomm’s bidding team in auctions in India (the 2.3 GHz band), the United States (the Lower 700 MHz band), and the United Kingdom (the L Band). He headed the regulatory team which obtained the approvals to sell Qualcomm’s spectrum licenses in all three countries. He was responsible for obtaining the regulatory approvals for Qualcomm’s $1.925 billion sale of Lower 700 MHz spectrum to AT&T in 2011.
Mr. Brenner has testified at hearings on spectrum policy before the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation and the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Communications & Technology. He has spoken at spectrum policy conferences in the United States, Canada, South Korea, Belgium, Great Britain, Hong Kong, and Israel. He joined Qualcomm in November 2003.
Mr. Brenner received his A.B. magna cum laude with distinction in public policy studies from Duke University in 1982. He won the prize for best paper on communications policy, and he received a four-year CBS Scholarship. He received his J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University in 1985. He is admitted to the Bars of the DC, Maryland, & the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the DC, Third, & Eleventh Circuits, & the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
Mr. Brenner is a member of the United States Federal Advisory Board for Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, & Timing, which advises the United States Executive Branch agencies on policy matters impacting the Global Positioning System. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of 5G Americas and the Duke University Library Advisory Board.

Spectrum is essential for the continued rollout and proliferation of Gigabit LTE, as well as for the commercial launches of 5G.  This session will provide an update on spectrum for 4G and 5G around the world.

Irvind Ghai serves as Vice President for the Connectivity Business Unit of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. In this role, he oversees product management and business development for Wi-Fi, mmWave 11ad and 4G/5G Small Cell solutions for Enterprises and Carriers.

Mr. Ghai has played a key role in driving the wired and wireless infrastructure networking business. He has led double-digit growth by working across technologies to offer the best connectivity approach across unlicensed and licensed spectrums, arriving at the most optimal answer for enterprise verticals that include education, hospitality and healthcare. Mr. Ghai joined Qualcomm through the Atheros acquisition in 2011. Prior to that, he spent 14 years at Texas Instruments, where he worked with Service Providers to define product market strategies for DSL, DOCSIS, Video and VoIP platforms. During his career with Texas Instruments, Mr. Ghai has had a proven track record of developing successful product lines, driving P&L growth and leading strong engineering and marketing teams.

Irvind Ghai holds an MBA from University of St. Thomas, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Calvin College.

Integration often goes hand-in-hand with progress in the telecom world. As services mature, advancing technology invariably affords carriers the opportunity to bundle discrete capabilities into a single, integrated device. That can lower costs, simplify customer choice and reduce inventory headaches. Carriers today find themselves confronting a new twist to this rule of thumb, in that the once stable options that drove this model are changing due to the explosion of innovation in both broadband access and in-home networking technology. His team is responsible for delivering solution architecture, pre-integration and optimization of these solutions on the Qualcomm Snapdragon platform. These solutions span broad areas of technologies such as machine learning, camera, audio, sensors, security etc.

Prior to joining product management, Manny led the worldwide applications engineering team for many years helping customers develop mobile, and IOT products. Under his leadership, a global team of applications engineers helped OEMs integrate, customize, differentiate, and optimize their products to meet their time to market needs.

Manny holds a M.S. Computer Science from Clemson University and M.S. in Physics from University of Delhi, India.

Android Smartphone Third-Party Hardware Component Ecosystem Update

Neil Jablon is senior director, product management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI), in San Diego, California, within the Qualcomm CDMA Technologies division. He leads product management for the Snapdragon™ chipset third-party hardware component ecosystem. Since 2011, Neil and his extended hardware team verified over 1,000 third-party hardware components for inclusion in a preferred vendor list targeted to Android smartphone and other OEMs.

Neil has held leadership roles in telecommunications with top global companies since 1986, including AT&T Bell Labs, AirTouch Communications, Vodafone Group, J-Phone Group (Tokyo), IBM Global Services (Beijing), and from 2006, QTI. He holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University, an MBA in general management from the UCLA Anderson School, and is an IEEE Senior Member. Neil is fluent in Chinese (Mandarin dialect) and achieved intermediate-to-advanced proficiency in Japanese.

Qualcomm Technologies offers a Preferred Vendor List (PVL) of third-party hardware components compatible with Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ Mobile Platform based Android smartphone designs, including Qualcomm® Reference Designs. This PVL numbers over 1,000 unique parts, covering the complete product roadmap, and includes memories, cameras, displays, touch panels, sensors, 3rd party RF components, crystals, and other passive components. 

This talk will highlight recent PVL additions and trends in memories, cameras, displays, and sensors. The PVL supports 42 different component types today. Despite increased technical complexity, we improved our memory PVL monthly throughput, while keeping backlog near zero. A new camera framework was introduced with the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform, along with a new Image Signal Processor (Qualcomm Spectra™ 280 ISP), and an improved camera tuning tool (Chromatix 7). Customers and vendors are playing a bigger role than ever before in Snapdragon camera ecosystem development. Smartphone OEMs at the premium tier transitioned from the time-tested 16:9 aspect ratio display to the new 18:9 to 21:9 displays. They are sourcing panels with wider color gamuts and higher contrast ratios to produce the optimal HDR picture quality. In the short term, OEMs have opted to carve out a notch area for speakers, camera sensors, and the like. We successfully introduced the Sensors Execution Environment (SEE) framework, with a new Driver Acceptance Test Suite that now directly verifies the sensor driver Application Program Interface (API). To support SEE functionality in the Snapdragon™ 845 Mobile Platform, the HDK845 hardware development platform and companion OpenSSC 6.x software suite were released. With these tools, numerous sensor drivers were verified for SEE compatibility, with the parts placed on our PVL.

Kapil Kamra is the Director of Product Management for Qualcomm’s sensor subsystem.  He is responsible for specifying the HW on Qualcomm SOC’s required for background sensor processing, the sensor subsystem’s software framework and the high level sensor algorithms for the mobile, IOT and other markets.  He also manages the partnerships with sensor hardware and software partners and Qualcomm’s customers for the Qualcomm sensor solution.  Prior to joining Qualcomm, Kapil worked at InvenSense Inc., Telegent Systems Inc. and Analog Devices Inc.  Kapil has a BSc.Eng from the University of New Brunswick and M.A.Sc. from the University of Toronto.

Sensors are ubiquitous for consumer electronics devices and are essential to making smart devices intuitive.  User authentication, gaming, health and fitness, user biometrics and intuitive user interfaces are just a handful of the application areas that are being transformed by always-on sensing technology.  Always-on sensing requires a unique approach to managing the sensor processing subsystem.  Qualcomm Technologies developed the marketing leading sensor processing subsystem in consumer electronics and will discuss the architectural aspects to meet the market need.
